Carl Smith is born in New York, USA. Studied violin from the age of 5. International chamber orchestra tours. 1976 Studies with Nadia Boulanger in Fontainebleau, France. Studied viola in Boston. Since 1978 member of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. 1989 Principal conductor of the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. 2001 inspired to the Ritterbratsche in Markneukirchen, Germany. He is specialized in the life and work of Hermann Ritter (inventor of the viola alta) and reintroduced this viola into our time. International concert performances as «Ritterbratschist» in Austria, Slovenia, Germany, Hungary, USA, Georgia and Japan. «Biodynamic» winegrowing in Gamlitz. Introduced the Georgian original method of wine pressing in clay amphoras, buried in the earth to Austria.
